How far does tattoo ink settle into the skin?

Millimeters, it only goes through the top 5 layers of skin. (Provided we do have 7 layers of skin.)

Nit picky detail to Emily's answer...

Sort of 7 levels; it can also be considered 3 - epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous.  I've found pages that claim either and some that point out that it depends on how you define "level".

Tatt_bratt's answer is the most accurate, even without dealing with this level of ambiguity.

your skin is made up an outermost layer named the epidermis(the "shell"), followed by the dermis(with oil glands and sweat glands etc) and the hypodermis(mostly fat tissue).

once healed, the ink settles at the top layer of the dermis, just underneath the epidermis
