I'm aware of the exchange rate is approximately AU$1 = 37 rupees, but what does this really mean? For example, how many rupees would it cost in India for a night in a medium-priced hotel? A decent meal? A soft drink?

  1. It depends which part of India you want to spend a night.  Whilein some places you can have comfortable stay in a medium hotel for one day within 1,000 rupees, in some cities, you may have to spend around 1,500 rupees for stay in same level of hotel in a day

  2. Your question is really interesting... how far does the Australian dollar go.... well, the answer according to me, would be approximately 1km

    :-)

  3. It really depends on the city in which you are planning to stay.

Also the rupee-AUD conversion rate is fluctuating...

  4. According to the Indian Bank records at yesterday (28th February, 2008) at 4pm, IST (Indian Standard Time) the TT buying rate of 1 Australian Dollar is (INR,Indian Rupees) Rs.37.34/- and the TT selling rate is Rs.37.65/-

Considering you are visiting the capital city of India, New Delhi.. one night at a hotel may cost you Rs.13,388/- (Aus$355.59/-) if its a 5 star hotel, dont recommend you to stay in a medium priced hotel in India since your a foreignor. You must consider safety aspects in mind, you know. Strongly recommend you not to have any soft drinks, those carbonated beverages in India due to the spread of pesticide content in its ingredients which are definetely harmful to health. So choose natural drinks like fruit juices and the like.. Again avoid chicken in India due to bird flu got spread in the state of West Bengal and you might not know where your chicken comes from and whether it has gone 100% stringent checking by the concerned authorities or not. Things might just not be like your country. And always drink bottled water, mineral water I mean, like Aquafina, Kinley are the brands I recommend, though some places Evian might be available. Do check on that, prepare for mosquitoes once evening, depends on location.. some places it might it be there all the time.. Electronic mosquito repellants are available. Some times even electricity failure may occur there. India is still a developing country.. normally a can of coke, 330ml costs Rs.18/- (Aus$ 47 cents)

Hope this helps.. Have a nice flight! Enjoy your India trip. Recommend you two hotels to stay in New Delhi..

1, The Taj Mahal Hotel (For which I have quoted the price for 1 adult guest, starting price)

    2, Uppal's Orchid - An Ecotel Hotel
