when the light comes on depending on the car you usually have 2 gallons or more of fuel left. i've done 50 miles with my car then it started to sputt

ABC news did a light hearted news on this issue.

It turns out that most cars will do another 1 hour (about 60 miles) after the light came on).  It seems like it really didn't matter what car it was.

And on the street, it was about half that.

It varies from car to car, but probably 20 - 30 miles. You probably have a gallon or less of gas left at that point.
