  1. Go the via San Isidro it is the prettiest and most logical route.

The road via Cerro la Muerte (the mountain of death) is my favorite in Costa Rica it is windy but it is in great condition and the views are amazing.

It is faster but for sure the best thing you can do is get an early start and get out of San Jose as fast as possible.  Leave at 6am and you will be in Domincal by 11am.  leave at 8am and you probably will not bake it before 1 pm.

The costal route does not make sense at all and will take you a significantly longer time.  The road between quepos and Dominical is really really bad and as others have mentioned there is currently a lot of construction.

    here is a good map:

  2. The driving distance is around 4.5 hours, either way you go. There are two options for driving, one through San Isidro General and the other through Quepos and Jaco. Driving time on either is about the same. The coastal road via Quepos is safer in general because the San Isidro option is on a highway way up in the mountains where fog can be a serious problem.

For the next few months there is some pretty serious contruction of bridges on the Quepos route, so you may want to check in Costa Rica about current driving conditions. If you must chose the mountain route, do it early in the day where the fog is less likely to be a problem. I would not drive that road at night, period.

As the crow flies, I would gues it is less than 60 miles, but there are nothing like direct routes to coastal areas. I am not sure of the actual distance but would guess it is a little over 200 kilometers to drive.

  3. I agree 100% with the above poster. I went to Pavones on my last trip (passing through Dominical on the way back) and the mountain route was definitely faster...  although it was very scary at times. Especially when my breaks went out because I was riding them too much on the way down the pass.

The dirt road south of Dominical was interesting too...

ANYWAY, yes, leave San Jose early, go through the mountains, and have a great time!
