How far in advance do good cooks put herbs in tomato based spaghetti sauce?

I´ve heard some herbs go in the sauce first thing, while some herbs should go in the sauce 5 minutes before serving.

  1. After you have soften the onions, add them in then, if using dried herbs. If using fresh ones, stir in about 5 mins from the end of cooking.  


  2. I would put them in a day ahead of time and then maybe some fresh ones at serving.

  3. If they are dried herbs, or you are using a fresh, woody herb - Thyme or Rosemary for example - then they should go in at the beginning. Similarly, Bay leaves should go in at the start.

    If you are using Basil, then it should be ripped up and thrown in at the end

  4. fresh herbs should go first so that the taste would develop and spread.

    dried herbs should be put in the middle because if cooked too long, they lose the flavor.

    fresh herbs=stronger and lasting flavor

    dried herbs=weaker and vanishing flavor

  5. Fresh basil and oregano are the ones I leave until the last, although I do put some oregano in to cook with the sauce.  The basil I usually tear up and add just before serving, I think that is a matter of personal preference.  

  6. Depends if they are dried throw them in at the begginging and let them simmer but if they are fresh wait untill about 5 minutes till the end so they still hold some flawor  and look purdyy lol  

  7. I put all my ingredients in and simmer all day to serve that evening.

  9. it depends what type of sauce your cooking sometimes it's not really necessary and any time will do

  10. I put mine in as far in advance as possible...this allows the flavor from them to travel throughout the sauce.  My spaghetti is always better the next day. : )
