How far in advanced should you schedule a flight?

I plan on traveling to Japan next summer. I was wondering how far in advanced should I schedule my flight? And when do you think is the latest I can schedule it?

You won't be able to buy tickets more than 330 days in advance, so be aware of that.

I would schedule it as far in advance as possible - if fares go down most airlines will allow you to refare the ticket and you can get the remainder back as travel credit.  If fares go up you're stuck - and with the way fuel prices are going up and airlines are cutting capacity it's tough to imagine fares would be headed down rather than up.

with you i would go a few months because of the travel distance and possible problems.
