How far in from my boundary do i have to plant a hedge in france?

To comply with the law without aggravating your neighbours:

A hedge which could grow up to or higher than 2m should be planted 2m from the neighbour's fence or wall. For hedges or bushes of less than 2m, a distance of 0,50m from the separating boundary will be adequate.

These distances are to be measured from the centre of the trunk to the middle of the boundary wall: these distances are set out in the Civil Code, but it is sensible to check with the town hall in case of local by-laws.

For hedges flanking the road, a distance of 50cm from the edge of your property is required, with a maximum height of 1m if you are close to a set of crossroads or a bend in the road, for the sake of visibility.
