newcaslte to sydney about 190km takes about 2.5 hours depending on where you get off in Sydney

The XPT from Brisbane is the train that takes you from Brisbane to Newcastle with its final destination being Sydney. It leaves just once each day from Brisbane (Roma Street Station) at 7.30am. It arrives at Newcastle (Broadmeadow Station) at 6.30 pm.

If you want, you can continue on to Sydney and you will arrive at around 9.30 pm.

It's not particularly comfortable on the train and it costs about $80AUD one way which is more than an airfare.

2.5hrs is pretty spot on for the journey from Newcastle to Sydney. Although do allow extra time for stoppages and the trains here are not all that punctual. It's quite a pleasant train ride although may I suggest avoiding peak times and also those times when school kids are making their way to an from school. It can be a bit rowdy and a bit crowded.
