  1. On the Spring and Fall equinox, at the rising and setting of the sun, the corner of the structure casts a shadow in the shape of a plumed serpent - Kukulcan, or Quetzalcoatl - along the side of the North staircase. On these two days, the shadows from the corner tiers slither down the northern side of the pyramid with the sun's movement.

The "snake thingy" happens at dawn on the day of the spring equinox.  And it's a disappointment if it's a cloudy day.  But to be there at dawn, you would need to leave Cancun at 3AM or spend the previous night at Chichen Itza (or the small town of Piste, next to it).

  2. abt 3 hrs

  3. Company is in Cancun call 1-888-862-3806 for help booking rooms and tours.

They will give you ideas for fun too like:

Definately the Swim with Dolphins, this is fantastic especially if you go to Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres, as you have a 40 minute boat ride there and back with open bar and entertainment.

The Captain Hook Pirate ships are another fun thing to try.

A Jungle tour through the mangroves, with snorkelling over the Coral reefs.

If you´re into diving, then Call Ben Mooney at http://www.mayanaquadive.com as he knows some great dive sites.

Xcaret is a wonderful day out, as you get to enjoy an ecopark, with dolphins, turtles ect and then get to watch probably the best show in the whole of Mexico at night.

A catamaran trip with http://www.cancuncatamarans.com is a must, a day sailing and snorkeling, with buffet lunch on Isla Mujeres, open bar, a shopping trip and the chance to have your picture taken holding a live shark.

At night, try the Cancun Party Hopper, there are now 2 different versions going to different bars, and they are great fun.

    Hope this helps.

  4. The Mayan ruin site at Chichen Itza, the best escavated site and probably the most famous in the area is approximately 2 1/2 hours away. Most tours stop along the way in a town known as Valladolid, which adds a bit of time to the trip, making it closer to 3 hours. Since this is probably the site you are considering, use the link to see what is offered on the public and private tours, and there are other tours available as well to the other sites mentioned below:

Tulum is the only Mayan ruin site located on the coast, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This site is much smaller than Chichen Itza and is approximately 1 1/2 hours from Cancun's Hotel Zone. The trips to Tulum, if you are on a tour, will often stop at the eco park of Xel-Ha to drop people off. This doesn't take too long so it really isn't a factor. I highly recommend that if you do take a combo tour to Tulum, that you choose the eco park of Xel-Ha over Xcaret. This is because Xcaret is too big to really enjoy on a half day trip. The other reason is that Xel-Ha offers an All Inclusive meal plan option that is very well worth the little bit of extra money.

The 3rd accessible Mayan ruin site from Cancun is known as Coba. This area is less escavated than both Chichen Itza and Tulum, but it has a totally different appeal. The archeological zone is quite large and very raw looking, something that the other sites lack. The largest pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula is here as well. The trip to Coba is a bit more challenging as it will take you over unpaved roads for quite a while. In total, the trip took about 2 1/2 hours from Cancun, but it felt like 4.

Whatever anyone tells you, the Mayan ruin sites on the Yucatan Peninsula's west side are not an easy trip from Cancun. This is the area known as the Puuc Route, and should be visited when you base yourself in the town of Merida.

    Have fun planning your trip,
