Monterrey is almost as far as El Paso,Tx is from Gary, Indiana.

You can drive south across Inidiana, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Monterrey is a 2hr drive from the Texas border (Laredo or Mc Allen).

Another option is to go to Chicago and Detroit and then, take a non-stop 2hr flight in the multiple carriers offering this service (American Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, Continental, Aeromexico).
