How far is Rockefeller Plaza from Penn Station in NYC?

We're thinking of going into NYC by train from NJ on Monday. That's a holiday, too. Being the country folks that we are *grin*, does anyone know how far it is from the train station to the Plaza?

Specifically, we're going to the Nintendo World Store with our kids. They've never seen the city before. Anyway, can we make it walking or do we need to venture into the subways and bus terminals?

  1. Penn is 32-34th between 8th and 7th ave.   Rockefeller Center is 48th-51st st between 6th and 5th ave.   If you walk up 7th avenue (walk in the opposite direction of the traffic for uptown direction) you will come to Times Square.  Then on 50th street walk in the  direction  of traffic again and you will come to Radio City Music Hall and then the Skating Rink further down the street.  Rockefeller Plaza is between 48th and 49th street and that is where the store is located.   Have fun!

  2. My friend, Rockefeller Center is about 15 blocks north of Penn Station. From Penn Station, walk a block east to 6th Avenue and 34th Street, and take the uptown (northbound) "B", "D", "F" or "V" subway lines from 34th Street to 47th - 50th Street/Rockefeller Center.

    Good luck

  3. about 1 mile.  16 short blocks (32nd to 48th) and 1.5 long

  4. It's definitely walkable, takes about 20 minutes, right through the heart of exciting midtown Manhattan!

You don't have to follow those directions exactly, but that's a rough guideline.  You can even use that site's "Street View" feature to get actual photos along the way!

Variables on this route include going through Times Square (included on that map), walking by Bryant Park, near the Empire State Building, going near the giant Macy's store at Herald Square, and so forth.

Of course, the subway might be just a bit faster.  There are a few ways to do this.  With no transfer, you can take an uptown 1 train to 50th Street, and walk from Broadway to 6th Avenue.  Or, walk to Herald Square and take the B/D/F/V, any one of them, to Rockefeller Center.

The fastest way to do it with no street walking at all is to get the 1/2/3 from Penn Station to Times Square, then get the 7 to 5th Avenue, then get the B/D/F/V to Rockefeller Center, but that's convoluted.

But hey, come on, they've never been here before, take them for a walk to show them around!

By the way, don't trust the train letters/numbers on Google Maps.  They're generally right, but they also show some trains that don't always stop at certain stations.  The MTA website, http://www.mta.info - is the better source for that.  Their "Trip Planner," http://tripplanner.mta.info is also very good.

So, I just say go ahead and walk it, it's a nice hike on a nice day!  Maybe sit in the park and have something to eat, ya know?

Must admit, that store is fun.  So much Wii!  Enjoy!
