  1. Wiena to Zurich is about 770 km. By car duer 7h:20 min.

    by train is possible too.

  2. Eurail & Train Travel Guide to Europe (houghton miffin) is a GREAT book on train travel.  It has all the timetables etc.  You  could even make a stop in your travels.  I have to agree with all...train travel in Europe is GREAT!!!  You can usually get a hotel reserved for youright there at the train station (they might charge a couple bucks at most for this service)  Just remember, if the schedule says 12:00 it means it LEAVES at 12:00 not 12:01 or 12:02......Have fun!!!  (seriously think about stopping in Salzburg...

  3. just come back Switzerland and Vienna.  i only speaks English, but had no problem going around.  Most people there speaks good english and they are very nice too.

Train is the best way to travel in europe.  but from where to Switzerland you are travelling from?  Assuming it's Zurich, it's 9 hours train to Vienna, shortest.  we stopped at Salzburg on the way, it's very small nice city, and from Salzburg is 3 more hours to Vienna.  If you are travelling from other part of Switzerland, usually it will take longer than 9 hours.

here is a site that has train schedule information for your reference:  http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en?...

  4. Vienna is sorta far away, because it is on the other side of Austria.  It would take a while by car, but train is fine.  The great thing about Europe is that you can go virtually anywhere by train, and efficiently too.  Its a bit far for a day trip though.  Perhaps overnight would be ok.

They speak German there, but a good number speak English.  You should be able to get around without a guide.  If you arent too street-wise, you would be better off sticking with a tour group.

As far as Switzerland is concerned, French and German and some Italian in the South are the languages.

  5. It's about 150 miles. Travel by train is easy, and highly recommended - you'll be travelling through the beautiful alps! (But do travel by daytime). Besides that, both Austrian and Swiss trains are generally very luxurious.

The main language is Switzerland is German, although in some parts they speak French (Lausanne, Geneve). In Austria they speak German. Most people will speak enough english to understand you. Going to Vienna for a day will be fine, but consider Salzburg as well (Mozart's place of birth) - a lot of culture, and about halfway from Switzerland to Vienna.

  6. The information given previously seems correct (770 kilometres or about 480 miles, reachable in 9 hours by train, thinking about Zurich.

Now, although small, Switzerland is a very multifaceted country - and the different parts may be some extra hours away from Zurich (the most practical railway station to arrive from Austria).

Naturally you can spend a whole day in Zurich, on foot, just to see what's going on. The medieval alley ways, the CBD with it's variety of luxurious shops and the lake are well-known attractions.

In Zurich, the official language is German - but it's easy to get through in English. Most clerks would be able to speak English, even most people on the street will be able to communicate in English (more or less). All touristic information is available in English anyway...

  7. train system is excellent very comfortable and very well connected enjoy ur trip
