If I want to go to the Great Barrier Reef from Sydney, is flying the best way to get there? and how long will that take?

Anyone been snorkeling there, water very deep? is it worth a trip?? I can't dive nor let alone swim, but I've snorkeled several times in Hawaii, Maldives, and in Thailand, so this wouldn't be any different right?

Thanks.

  1. personally i would just fly depends when you go but you get get a flight to cairns with virgin for about $180 return depends on your budget.. but petrol is expensive too!

Every tour goes to different places so i don't really now the depth of the water but i know there are tours that go to an island and you just snorkel off the coast. i saw alot when i went there was a shark.. also on the way back there was a whale which was amazing. it should be quite similar snorkeling in the great barrier reef.

also with the tour i went on there was also a glass boat which you could go on and see everything. Hope that helps oh and just a tip depending on your budget try and stay in palm cove instead of the center of Cains. Its so pretty and there is a beach.

  2. you can fly from sydney to carins in about 3 hrs and there are heaps of reef tours that leave from there if you shop around you can get it pretty cheap with lunch and snacks included. The reef is amazing one of the best things i ever did and well worth doing the water ifs fairly shallow and if you dont want to get wet some reef tours also have a glass bottom boat to go for a trip in.

  3. If you want to go to the great barrier reef from Sydney and there is nothing you are interested in seeing in between you should fly - the great barrier reef is in the north of Queensland and it takes 25+ hours driving.  But there are places to see and things to do along the way if you want to stop.  Flying will take about 3 hours.    There are shallow reefs and deep reefs, the thing is bloody massive, but don't worry if you want to stick to shallow waters you will have no problems.

  4. Flying to Queensland will take about 2 hours and driving there will be about 10 hours. The water won't be deep so you will have some straches on your leg and it hurts soo much. I dont think it won't be different either.
