How far is computer technology away from giving perfect translations?

Many on-line translators change text into perfect Gibberish rather than giving an acceptable translation. Will this get better?

There are already some very good machine translators and dictionaries.  One of the best translators is @promt

It is too much to hope that any machine translator will be able to handle colloquialisms.  It is always going to be necessary to give them standard use language to work on.  Even people who are speaking a second language perfectly will still sometimes misunderstand slang, idioms, colloquialisms and dialects.

I come from Yorkshire in England but much of what is said by people from Newcastle upon Tyne only 100 miles away is difficult and sometimes impossible to understand.

the technology was hear years ago, making it affordable is a diffrent matter.

since some languages have such diverse meanings for the same thing, it would be down to the user to choose which meaning he/she wanted to put.

Seeing as colloquial sayings will continue to update more and more every year (nay, every day), I doubt so. Plus, grammar is bound to change every now and then, and the translated text may not even have the same meaning and context as you intended it to have.
