The Italian State Train Company http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ run fast trains that do the journey in 2hrs 39 minutes - they also run more or less along the direct route, through Bologna and Ferrara

It's about 4 hours by train.  Try Cinque Terre too.  It was the best!

As to Florence...

Stay in Fiesole which overlooks Florence.  Bus 7 takes you between Fiesole and the train station, with stops at convenient sightseeing places.  A multi-day bus ticket is very cheap!
