  1. Take the train to the main station (as an earlier poster also said).  I would advise you not to take a taxi.  There is a fair bit of traffic in Zurich except during the small hours of the morning as the traffic lights are configured to slow down cars so it doesn't really save you any time.  When I went out there a couple of weeks ago, my taxi driver was the worst driver ever.  He almost hit a truck and then eventually had an accident with another car.  I gave him my work contact details but if his insurers write to me then I am going to say it was his fault for not looking.  My boss was with me and paid the fare - if it was just me I might have refused.  I'm going out on Monday and will be taking the train.

If you need to ask for directions, everyone speaks English (I once asked for directions in German only to get an answer in English).

  2. The train is cheap and really easy. The train (bahnhof) is at the airport and you want to travel to the main station Zurich Hauptbahnhof (HB).

All the ticket sellers speak perfect English. A lot of taxi drivers don't.

When you get to Hauptbahnhof. It's a shortish walk down the river.. see

or get tram 4 to Rudolf BrunBrucke.

Your train ticket will also be valid on the tram.

Taxi from airport would be about 45CHF. £20

Dont be worried - it's a friendly place...

  3. Train is faster and cheaper and really just as easy.

The train station is downstairs in the airport. You'll want a ticket for Zurich HB (I believe it's about 5 franks one way) and it will be valid on the tram as well. (You can quite possibly get away with not buying a ticket at all, but I shouldn't say that... If you're caught you pay 80 CHF) If you buy a return ticket it will be valid for 24 hours, so that might be the better option even if you're not heading back to the airport right away.

All the trains from the airport have announcements in English as well as German and sometimes French or Italian. In English it's called Zurich main station. It will be the first, second or third stop depending which train you take. You can take the S-bahn (local train) or the longer-distance trains, makes no difference, same ticket.

When you get to HB, head to the big main hall (they're setting up a Christmas market there right now) and go across it to Bahnhofquai/Hauptbahnhof. That's where you can catch tram 4. If it's nice you can easily walk along the river to where you want to go, 10 or 15 minutes.

By the way, where you're going is usually called the Niederdorf. The "old town" usually refers to the part across the river from there (same side of the river as the train station). But I could be wrong!

  4. hey there. Travel with the train! it is very easy, just follow the signs. Bevor you go down to the tracks you can buy a train ticket to zürich main station (or zürich HB in german. )

I dont quite know, if there is a better train station for you, but the clerk on the desk can tell you. ask for a schedule and the guy will help you.

don t worry swiss people know english and it s dead easy to travel over here.

  5. Train is easier, faster, cheaper.  Learn a little German before you go.  Pimsleur method is best.  You can get a Quick and Simple at Borders.

  6. "Trains run between Zurich main station and the airport every 10 minutes during peak periods (travel time: 10 minutes)"

Just enter your information in this search engine (follow the link)

and when you're done, don't forget to give me ten points. LOL!!!

  8. Take the street car system,
