  2. You could throw a ball the distance.  The key is what part of the city centre (or Centrum as its called).  Amsterdam Centrum is actually quite large and an area near the central station is currently dug up.  Public transport - trams particularly are so efficient its a fantasy if you are used to Irish, UK or US type service - though not as good as the Germans.  What do you want to do?  Where do you want to go?  Amsterdam is great for walking or cycling but if your time is limited you may wish to opt for public transport.

  3. isjmudden the ferry/cruise port is 10 mins by tram/ taxi and the sightseeing is fantastic

    20 mins on foot

  4. If I remember correctly, It wasn't far at all. The cruise ship had buses there that would take you into town and they were free except a tip if you want. We did a lot of shopping and walking around to get a good feel of Amsterdam. Then when the ship was getting ready to leave, a group of fireman from Amsterdam were on the pier and sang traditional songs for all of us on the ship. They had wooden shoes on and traditional clothes. It was really cool.
