In the mid 1970's the coastal limit for th U.S. was changed from 15 miles to 200 miles in order to make it harder for spy trawlers to eavesdrop on communications. The actual limits are different from country to country and are usually voted and posted in the U.N.

Generally twelve miles, as for most countries. It is less than twelve miles if it overlaps another countries territorial waters. In that cases, it is usually the median point between the two countries.
