  1. Byron Bay, NSW to Airlie Beach, Qld.

Driving time - 16.5 hours (no stops included)

    Distance - 1284.40 kms

Printable directions and road conditions etc on website below.

  2. You will enjoy byron bay, nice place, soak it up for a couple of nights. Its about a 2+1/2hr-3hr drive to Sunny coast from there, then 9hr straight drive (with 2 fuel stops at gin gin+rocky) to Mackay. Then about 1.20hr to Airlie (from memory). Thats sitting on the 110kmp limit all the way from S/coast,and observing signed limits etc. Have travelled this route several times in the last 2yrs,please be aware that the stretch of road between Rocky+Mackay you can or will become very fatigued,as it is just long stretches of road.

I really enjoy the drive, but please make sure you have either someone to share the driving or have a good break at Rocky (have a good walk around and something to eat)

As said before, just take your time mate. Also, from about Maryborough onwards, If driving at night, watch for wildlife, especially at day break north of Rocky.. very bad.

Hope this helps, wish you a safe trip, and enjoy the changing scenery the further north you go..

  3. What a load of rubbish i live in Brisbane and i can drive to Byron Bay in a little over 2 hours and last year we went to Airlie and it took a little over 10 hours all at the speed limit. so i don't know how it could take someone 16 hours. Enjoy Airlie and the islands it rocks
