How far would I go to say local?

This may sound like a confusing question; so I apologise in advance :).

Say I live in Blackpool for example, would only Blackpool be 'local' to me, or could I go as far as Manchester or Preston? It's like in reality shows for example; could a person from Blackburn support somebody from Rochdale and then say they're supporting them because it's good to support 'local' people?

Would you classify 'local' as being from the same town, county, region, country or what?

Again, I do apologise if this came across as confusing. It's just something that's always made me think.

  1. The whole planet could be local if you happen to talking in terms of the Solar system.  That system's also local in comparison to the galaxy, and the Milky Way is local in comparison to the rest of the universe.  Local is a relative term, and it depends upon context.  All of Lancashire is local for you in comparison to the rest of Europe.

  2. ''Local'' is a rather vague term. It generally includes your town and the surrounding area, but it usually doesn't include other big cities. (It can include several small towns, but will usually not include two big cities)

There is no real rule as to what defines local, though.

  3. Humans stopped marking their territory, like dogs do, long ago. When everybody moves to every other place only soccer hooligans would want to emulate canine virtues in some form.

  4. I am "local" to planet earth
