I am moving barns because I want my horse to get better care, but my new barn is 40 minutes away from my house. Do you think it's worth it, and how far would you drive?

  1. Around here it's pretty common for people to have an hour drive one way to get to a good facility...I never did it, but I never needed to.

  2. I used to drive 1.5hrs to board my horse, since it was further away, I didn't go out to see her as often, but the care was GREAT and I didn't have to worry about her when I was away...so in the long run, I saved time and money instead of making 100 trips per week just to "Check Up" on her.(hope this helps!)

  3. If it's better for the animal I would do it!

  4. I cant say i have experience with this (i live five minutes away from Tango) but my cousin however is a good 45 minutes from her barn but she currently moved closer due to gas prices. So.. I dont know if it is worth it due to the price of gas and stuff...but do what you feel is right for the care of your horse

  5. Anyone who has ever owned or loved a horse, can tell you it's like having a child.  How far would you drive to make sure your child was getting the best care?

  6. like care in the barn, guessing ur boarding her, then ya its worth it, u want ur horse well takin care of and healthy

  7. You are the owner and  YOU MUST do what is best for your animals.  If driving the extra miles hurts his care then don't do it.  If driving is better for the horse then do it.  They depend on you. You need to make the decision that is right for the animal.

  8. i know somebody who drove 45 min 4 days a week to get to their horse..

    so it depends.

my limit is 25 min, because after that the cost of gas allows you to go to a more-expensive better barn near you.

  9. You should try and find a medium between the distance and the standard of the agistment. I personally keep my horse in a paddock 2 minutes away from my house and even though she doesnt have 24 hour watch on her she still gets a lot of attention from me and she enjoys having a bond with someone plus because shes close she gets all the care she needs. Your horse might be getting good care from other people but then your horse might enjoy having you around everyday to take care of him/her and could also enjoy having special attention from one particular person. It depends on your circumstances though nobody can tell you the way to go unless they know what the whole situation is. I would drive a long way for my horse but at the same time I wouldnt see the point in having my own horse if I decided to leave her in the good care of others if I had the opportunity to look after her myself to the best of my ability nobody can care for your horse like you can.

  10. I will be able to move to a better barn in two years that is 30 minutes away. I dont have anyway to get out there now but once I can I am there. That is about as far as I would go though.

  11. HMMM...it depends on the amount for board if it is a drastic diffrence idk. If it is about the same I would travel up to 1hr. maybe a little longer. Whatever is best for the horse in my mind I would do...
