  1. Fast enough to pull a water skier out of the water!

  2. Well in the 2007 university boat race they did the 4.5 miles in 17.8 minutes which works out at an average just over 15 mph.  They are fast but if they were sprinting on a calm lake they could squeeze a little more but 20 mph would be tops.

Edit - 15 mph may be just fast enough to ski but 8 rowers could never deliver the thrust to pull a skier out of the water.

  3. back in the day my University crew would do 2,000 meters ( a mile and a third )  in just about 6 minutes......so 10 miles and hour......
