A 2.00 X 10^3 kg car rounds a circular turn of radius 10.0 m. If the road is flat and the coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road is 0.7, how fast can the car go without skidding?

  1. Weight won't matter.  It's a red herring in this problem.  Calculate the speed so that the acceleration toward the center of the circle is 0.7g (or 0.7 * 9.8 m/s^2).

  2. Given: m=2000kg

                 r= 10 m

                uk= .7

                 g= 10

    First find the frictional force using the equation Ff = m*g*uk (2000*10*.7).

    Then using Fc = mvt^2/r (2000vt^2/10) you can find the centripetal force.

    Finally set the Ff=Fc and solve (14000 = 200 vt^2). Divide 14000 by 200 then square root that answer to find the speed of the car without skidding.

    Answer: 8.4 m/s
