How fast do common goldfish grow?

I have one common goldfish in a 10 gallon tank right now, it's only 2.5-3 months old. It grew fast at first and then slowed down. But it seems pretty healthy right now...how much longer until I should upgrade to a new tank?

  1. In a good environment expect a common goldfish to grow to maybe 6" in a year. It's growth may be slower in a small tank, but thats not really a good thing.

He's fine in there right now, but the sooner you can get him a bigger tank the better. 6 months is probably the longest I would leave it.

It doesn't need a 50gal tank now, but it will in a few years.

  2. Go bigger as soon as you can.

It will stunt their growth and greatly decrease their chance of living.

If it's growth is already slowing down, it's probably time for a bigger tank.

  3. i would get the minimum sized tank for a comet (50 gallons) soon before your fish becomes stunted

  4. A common usually grows pretty fast but they will try to adapt to the tank they are in.  People think this is fine because they stay small but actually their internal organs keep growing and they eventually die of organ failure.  Giving them a large environment enables them to keep growing.
