  1. A steam engine locomotive on rails can reach more than 125 mph, I believe the record in England is 137mph but it was not the Mallard. A steam traction engine running along public roads is limited by law to around 12mph in England with a theoretical maximum of around 30 mph, but the safety and braking distance considerations are of greater concern.


  2. Theoretically, a steam engine is only limited by friction and the pressure capabilities of it's components. In theory, they can go as fast as anything else on wheels.
