  1. the correct answer is... unatainable do to so many variables..

    the variables are:

the RESISTANCE thru the water the boat you install the motor on has.  this resistance is also a variable as to smothness of surface contact as well as design to aid in the speed and the boats deplacement of water actual the weight of the boat as well as the weight in the boat!

and if that is not is not confusing enough we will no examine another main variable...  HORSEPOWER and the delivery of that horspower to the propeller.

Horsepower is sometimes measured at different locations and some time just theoriticaly assumed..  for example some Manufactures will boost the number of the HP of their engine by measuring at the end of the crankshaft.  This practice will eliminate any loss of HP thru the drive train which in an outboard is quite considerable.  If the measurement is taken after passing tru the power train it will be a faster motor when compared to the ones who measure theirs at the crank end.  and lastly the biggist determination of speed when comparing equal HP and Resistance boats and motors will be the Pitch of the propeller..  this PITCH is like the gear ratio of a car.  the higher the ratio the more pulling power or acceleration you will have.  so a propeller with a pitch of 8 will theoreticaly travel 8 inches thru the water in one revolution while a 10 pitch will travel 2 inches further.   the 8 inch one will push more weight and accelerat faster while the 10 inch one will go faster in the end run (all things equal)

so to do the math find the max rotation of the engine..calculate the ratio thru the lower end and finally how many reveolution that will turn your propeller at Max speed.  now multiply that number by the pitch of the prop to get theoretical forward travel in inches.. convert that to feet, convet that to miles and then make sure you adjust for the convertion from RPM to MPH and WAL-LA you have the theoretical speed of your two equally matched HP/RESISTANCE/PITCH assumtions..

Bear in mind this will never, ever be accurate.

  2. ah! you have the same hobby like me!

You know when I don't have time to go on cruising on boat because of work or vacation still far, I liked to read many many ideas on cruising. You want to have a readings too? there are many.  www.leisure-vacation-cruising.info and www.vacation-planning.blogspot.com and www.zzzactive-scubadiving.com and www.123cruises.blogspot.com and sometimes if it fits our time can get free ridings on a hover craft, check this www.hovercraftonly.blogspot.com

OK I wasn't spamming, but these webs brings many ideas when we are in the middle of working period not having time to go on boating. Check it out, I hope you'll have fun reading too!

  3. depends on what kind of boat you put it on, how many people are in the boat, if the waters choppy,,, ect.  i got a 25hp Mercury on a 16ft jon boat, goes 29mph
