  1. LearJets are typical models of business jets, of which there are also a number of other makes and models.  The speeds range from about 450 mph to about 575 mph, depending on design and equipment.

They do not hold any gas, and don't even hold any gasoline, if that is what you mean.  They run on jet fuel, and the capacity ranges from 4,000 lbs to 12,000 lbs, giving a range of anywhere from 2,000 nm to 4,500 nm.

They burn a lot, so they carry a lot.  Have your checkbook handy.

Will what freeze in cold conditions?  The fuel?  Not above 100 degrees F below zero or thereabouts.

For lots more information, try an internet search on "business jet."

  2. It depends on the Lear model you're talking about.  I used to fly a Lear 24 and our Vmo was .82 mach or about 460 Knots True Airspeed.  All of the 20 series lears (beginning with the first lear, the 23) are what are called pure jets or straight jets.  They don't have bypass air like modern jets so they are very noisy...but they perform great at high altitudes.  All of the other lears (the 30, 40, 50, and 60 series) are turbo fan engines.  They have a high bypass of air and I'm not sure what their top speed is...probably similar to the 20 series as the limiting factor of cruise speed is the airframe/not the engine.

The real advantage of the pure jet is that the 20 series Lears climb like missiles cuz they don't loose their climb power at altitude (they're big gas guzzlers though at sea level).  The 24F I flew could go from Sea Level to 41,000 feet in 9 minutes.  The only Lear that could outperform us was the 23 (the original Lear).  It could climb to FL410 in 8:30 seconds.  Falcon 10's have similar performance to the 24 as they are also purejets.

For comparison I currently fly an Embraer Regional Jet that has turbofan engines.  It takes us 18 minutes to get to 36,000 feet.  Granted the Thrust to weight is a bit better on the Lear.

The fastest business jet is the Citation X (ten)...it cruises at Mach .92.  That's about as close to the speed of sound as a biz jet will be capable of until they develop a supersonic one.

  3. Contrary to popular belief a lear is not fast as executive jets go. And no lear ever went from SL to 410 in nine minutes. Well over 2000 hours in lears here. Yes, 23s and 24s too. And the Gulfstream 650 will cruise at .94 so yes, they'll out run a Citation X. C'mon folks, it's yahoo answers not yahoo guesses.
