First, pay -- It depends on where in CA you teach. Some districts have tons of substitutes. Others are crying for them. I've heard that some pay about $200 a day, others only a pittance.

Second, frequency -- I did some subbing and found that if you do a good job, you get called back -- frequently. I was once asked to sub for almost half a semester. The teacher they'd hired took another job and they called me. I got to establish a curriculum, write tests, all the things a "real" teacher has to do.
