Question:

How frequent to perfrom disk defragmentation?

I have IObit Smart Defrag and a licensed TuneUp Utilities. Now what bothers me is that in the IObit there is an Auto Defrag option. Is it advisable to turn that on? If I will turn it on, will it wear out my hard drive?

On the tuneup utilities there is also the Disk Defragmenter. But how frequent will I defrag my disk?

In addition, are those two programs excellent in defragging? Any suggestions will do.

Thanks

  1. Once month will do nicely man

  2.   A lot of that would depend on how much you use your computer as Windows scatters files all over the disk every time you use it. I just do a clean up and use the defrag that comes with Windows and have never had a problem. It won't wear your disk out unless you have it so messed up it can't finish and just runs day and night. And yes, I have seen that happen as the disk uses unused space to relocate the files while it puts them together and if your free space is not enough then it can't finish defrag and will just run until you stop it.

  3. once a week is good, it only takes a couple of minutes

  4. Keeping the drive defragmented improves drive access speeds. An intelligent automatic defragmenter like Diskeeper 2008 will not wear out the drive because it defrags only when necessary and processes the drive using only idle system resources. It uses minimum resources to maximize disk performance.

You can always download free trial versions of Diskeeper 2008 from our website.

  5. It depends on your usage. If you're regularly editing photos, videos or playing games than you may find that you're using a lot of swap space.

In this case, you may want to defrag once or twice a month or more.

Remember, a defrag might push your hard drive. It does a lot of work during a defrag and therefore, might reduce the life-span of the drive if performed on a regualr basis (every week, every day...).

One way to 'help' with fragmented files is to set a static page file (swap file). Depending on your operating system, there are various tutorials out there for this.

If your usage is moderate: browsing the web, word processing, listening to music etc, you might not need to defrag more than every 6 months. If at all.

  6. HONESTLY I DO  IT ONCE A WEEK BUT ON MY OTHER LAPTOP AND I NEVER DO IT AND ITS PERFECTLY FINE SO JUST DONT BOTHER

  7. The Best thing to do.

Inactivate that auto defrag if you prefer to use your IObit Smart Defrag.

Now for both programs, you could choose on which program you want to perform the disk defragmentation as it does both the same thing.

It means that you will just manually defrag your disk.

Now for the main defragmentation frequency, just defrag your system every month because defragging your disk frequently makes your disk susceptible to damages and might render malfunction of it.
