  1. Are you talking about vitamin B6? Vitamin B6 is needed for more than 100 enzymes involved in protein metabolism. It is also essential for red blood cell metabolism. The nervous and immune systems need vitamin B6 to function efficiently, and it is also needed for the conversion of tryptophan (an amino acid) to niacin (a vitamin).

B vitamin deficiencies are almost unknown in the UK, so supplements are rarely needed, except perhaps in alcoholics. ( Also except for the deficiency of B12, which is most frequently due to an auto-immune condition.)

There is no difference between the supplement and the prescribed medication, except for dose, the prescription only preparation being of higher strength.

There is some evidence that the higher doses, up to 100 mgs daily, reduces PMS. However higher doses still, many hundreds of mgs a day were taken over enthusiastically by American women to attempt to combat PMS caused side effects, the most important of which was peripheral neuropathy, damage to the peripheral nerves, causing pain and numbness. This was the reason that the strength of the over the counter supplements was reduced.

  2. Are you talking about a vitamin?  If so, there

is no such thing as Vitamin 6.  Your question
