  1. When it comes to lower end stuff... say $400 or less... all bikes are pretty much the same. Ignore brand and get what you like... less expensive Jamis bikes are built in the same factory- by the same people- as Raleigh, Diamondback, MongoosePRO, and some Trek and Specialized.

  2. Jamis is a very solid manufacturer that seems to offer a lot of value at every price point.  I find some of their upper end road and mountain bikes to be the best all around performers in the price range.  Remember; it is more expensive to upgrade parts later.  If you really think you will ride it, make sure you get a bike that fits and then buy as much bike as you can reasonably afford.  The more you spend, within limits, the lighter the bike, the better the components (shifting, braking, reliability) and the happier you will be.  Peace.

  3. Jamis makes good stuff.  I'd prefer the Durango of the two you mention due to its superior frame...

  4. Jamis began in the late 70's as a beach cruiser manufacturer.  They later moved into road and mountain bikes and have a generally good reputation.  Now they sell from beginner to pro level bikes.

Most entry level bikes at any given price point will be very similar.  Indeed, most bikes at this price level are made by a very few Asian builders and carry different labels at retail.  I've attached a link below to an industry insider's article on this dirty little secret.

As a beginner you should pay more attention to the brand and level of the components than to the brand name on the frame.  Also, the support of a good bicycle shop is important to the typical beginner.  So, if the Jamis is sold by a good local shop, and they are giving you a good price, then go for it.

For comparison shopping, I'm giving you links to some of the better on-line sellers, who range from the lowest to the highest priced in the business.  This may help you negotiate the best price on the Jamis.

I've bought from all of them.  Good experiences every time.

Most important: get out there and ride.

    Ben
