How good are air coolers?

my fan has just stopped working so its time to buy another. but this time i thought id have a look at air conditioners.. then i saw the price tag. but i also noticed some air coolers on the same page (of the argos catalogue), and the price was about £56. dose anyone have one of these air coolers and do they work well, or should i just not bother.

I have one and we have had it for a few years now, and to be honest they are OK but not brilliant unless you put ice or very, very cold water in them, which can turn into a bit of a pain in the bum as in weather like this the ice melts pretty quickly, and so then the cooler doesn't seem to cool the air much at all, more like just move it about, so you have to refill with more ice...I just don't have the freezer space to make the quantity of ice as often as it seems to want me to!

The other thing is they are pretty noisy; we can't use ours at night time as it keeps my other half awake, although as I said we have had it a few years so maybe the newer ones are quieter, I'm not sure.

I personally think ceiling fans in particular are a lot better at cooling down a room, so I would recommend one of those instead...if someone offered to swap me one for my cooler I'd bit their hand off lol....although they do have the disadvantage of being fixed in place, they definitely do the job much better!

I have 2 both works good, with water or without you can but ice too , but using chilled water make it perfect

Hi,

I assume these have a water tank ?

Basically your dipping a wet towel in a bucket, and blowing fanned air through the material so  you are getting a damp air flow

The towel sucks up the water and drys in the fan, as it sheds its  tank

Maybe not a good solution if you have wooden floors ?
