How good are cannon AE-1's?

Cool_Breeze is right .... the only problem is don't expect to use the lenses on a DSLR .... they will not fit.

Unlike old Nikon lenses from the late 1950's, in 1988, Canon completely changed their camera system and so only lenses designed for the EOS Canon's will work on the Canon DSLR's (these are called EF and EF-S lenses)

The AE-1 was an excellent camera in its day, which was the late 1970's.  As far as film cameras with manual focus, it's still one the best there is.  There are tons and tons of lenses, flashes, and accessories made for it.  If you're looking for a film camera with manual focus, it would be hard to beat.
