How good do you have to be to get into big wave surfing?

You have to be really good. The wave can knock your breath out if your not good.

very good. the aves are extremely heavy and if you mess up you may have the Weight of a house falling on top of you. If you are really keen to start big Wave surfing i recomend you keep on practising until you feel totally prepared and ready. When you do decide to start research Well and find some experianced friends and people to come With you and help out!

Very good.  Plus you need to be a very good swimmer and be able to hold your breath at least 2 minutes.  The reasons are obvious - it's a life threatening activity!  It also depends if you plan on paddling into big waves (like at Mavericks) or get towed in (in which case, you also need a partner).  The equipment is also different for both.
