Question:

How good do you have to be to go to art school?

I'm 16 at the moment, and while there are many people at my age who can paint/draw much better than me, I'm not bad. I'd say there's lots of room for improvement.

I'd love to be an artist, ergo I'd like to study art in a couple of years. But I'm afraid I won't be good enough and/or that all my classmates will be on a so much higher level than me so that I'll feel like **** all the time.

But you go to university so that you can learn something, right? But how much do you actually learn in art school, and how much pre-knowledge/talent do you have to bring.

Thanks!

  1. You will need to develop a portfolio of your work.  Use many mediums as best you can.  Yes, school is for learning but you will definitely be behind those with experience. Take classes now and become familiar with techniques -- art is all technique.

  2. Most art school will require you to have a portfolio. Keep taking art classes at school and also check if there is a great artist in your area who teaches. My art teacher works with students who want to get into art schools all the time. He helps them fine tune their portfolio. That kind of attention you normally will not get in school. Just make sure to take many business classes as well. It is very difficult to make a living wage doing art.

  3. well im exactly the same so i enetred a community college to improve then im going to a art school! u may think eeeh community college y! well the teachers there are accualy are good i have learned alot in one semester!

  4. anyone can go to art school - if they can afford it. Doesn't mean you'll succeed once you get there.

Art schools are usually very, very expensive.

  5. I sucked at art at school, but was always interested. Now I'm a pretty known designer.

I didn't go to uni to study anything, but I taught myself....

  6. Don't worry about it.  Keep practicing.  Experiment with different media.  Put together a portfolio of about 25 works and take them around to different galleries.  Without seeing your work, I believe that you are good enough to exhibit.

  7. It depends what kind of art you want to get into and which school you're talking about.  Art can vary dramatically.  Are you looking to go away?

There are many ways to get into "art."  Whether it's multimedia, television, advertising, dance, writing, painting, drawing, etc.  The below school is in Chicago, it's where I go.

  8. All you can do is apply, send some of your work in and see if you get accepted.

I am a qualified computer graphic designer who is best suited to Mac op production work and who enjoys photography although my actual creative art skills aren't the best.

  9. Work hard now.  You have to be very discipline. Creating and refining your portfolio must become an obsession. You should be practicing whenever you can.  Cut down on TV, random internet surfing and focus your time.
