  1. Pay your entry fee. Submit your application on time. Meet the qualifications set for the tournament as to handicap index and you are in. All too many of the contestants have no business playing and muck up the field because their handicaps are based only on the lowest scores they have made. Vanity handicaps prevent them from recording their poor scores. In all honesty, if your handicap is legitimate and you feel you will not disgrace yourself, by all means, enter a few amateur tournaments. They are  experiences which  all all golfers should go through.

  2. You really dont need to be that good. I was looking at scores from my home states Amatuer championship qualifying tournaments.  Most of the top qualifying amatuers were shoothing par or over par.  The weaker amatuers in the sectional qualifying tournaments were shooting as bad as 20 over par.

  3. There are many "amateur tournaments" that you can enter. The Golf channel amateur tour is a great one that anyone can enter. They are split up in flights based on your handicap. You can be a zero to 40 and play with people at the same skill level as you.

  4. if the tournament uses handicaps, then it doesnt matter how good you are, as long as you can play well under pressure.

if its a scratch tournament, i wouldn't bother unless you're regularly in the mid 70s or better

  5. The only way you will know if you are ready is if you actually play in one. There are a lot of tournaments, and they all have the handicap requirements for them listed. Find one that is within your handicap range and have a go.

    Good Luck

  6. It depends on the hosting authority and what the requirements/eligability are.

For instance the USGA sanctioned U.S. Amateur:

"The U.S. Amateur, the oldest USGA championship, was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. The event, which has no age restriction, is open to those with a Handicap Index of 2.4 or lower."

    The U.S. Junior Amateur:

"While it is not the oldest competition, the U.S. Junior Amateur is considered the premier junior competition, having been around since 1948. The event is open to male golfers who have not reached their 18th birthday prior to the close of competition and whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 6.4."

  7. You have to be pretty good!  Better than the average golfer.  If you don't shoot in the 70's forget it till you can shoot 80 or under.  If you can consistently shoot in the 70-80 range then I'd say try it and see.  It can't hurt.  Just keep in mind the pressure is going to be on you so I hope you have experience in playing competitive golf.  Good Luck!
