  1. You need to be able to swim a 50m pool

  2. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you can swim 3 times as far as you are going out to sea.  Also practise swimming regularly underwater and above, to increase this distance and your capacity for holding your breath,  I think the 50m guy could be having you on.

  3. Extremely good! If you don't know how to swim, and you get stuck in a tiddle wave, your like a total gonner. Btw, if you do get stuck in a tiddle wave, swim side ways! Swimming none stop laps of hardcore freestyle, will for sure get you started. But don't bother heading for the ocean anytime soon if your not well at swimming.

  4. You need to be an excellent swimmer!! Make sure you get some training and go out with a experienced/skilled person. I was challenged once by a friend that I couldn't do something in the water. Fortunately they got to me and pulled me out and was able to pump my lungs clear and get my heart going again. The life guard who rescued me later told me another minute, at the most, would have probably been too long. I remember him crying as I became conscious again, he thought he'd lost me. Thank you Owen where ever you may be!!!.

Don't do any of it until you're really prepared and confident as a strong, strong swimmer.....don't make my mistake, I wasn't a strong swimmer then, just ego challenged and stupid.

  5. Obviously you need to be good, but for power you have to just start paddling, even when there's no waves. And stretch yourself out every time.

Take lessons to get started. Or go with a friend.

get out there a lot and you'll get the hang of it. No use thinking about it. Nothing will prepare you.

-And by this I don't mean go out when its big, obviously......

  6. Out of all those things you have said you need to be very good at swimming.

  7. I've tried surfing, not the others, and you need to be pretty good.  You need to be able to get your *** kicked by waves and not drown, you can get tumbled around pretty good.
