I am currently doing a project on incubators. We were looking to use rice as a desiccant and were unsure of its properties and abilities to absorb water from the air. So my question is what is the ability of rice to aborb water? How fast will it do this?

  1. Rice will not act as a humidifier, as it contains very little water.

It will act as a dehumidifier for the same reason.

How good and how fast depends a lot on the circumstances, you need to run a test.

  2. I'm not sure with open air, but rice is used alot in absorbing moisture from things.

Some people put rice in salt shakers to keep the salt from clumping from humidity, and if you stick a wet electronic device in a container with rice for a few days, it will soak up most of the moisture out to hopefully make it usable again.
