  1. .204 and for that matter .17 are lazer-like...unless you have to buck the wind with them. The bullet weight is just not there.

I have shot both... and found them to be solutions to a non existant problem... we had all the cartridges we need about 70 years ago.

But ..gun makers need to sell new guns... and thus, we get new "boolits" from time to time........

  2. A far better choice in a Varmint caliber is the 22-250.*

  3. buy an h&r handi rifle. Its a single shot rifle that costs around $200 and mine will shoot 1/2 inch groups all day long(w/ handloads). If you dont like it you can buy a .223 or 22-250 but I dont think you will once you shoot it.

  4. It is only as good as the shooter. If you can't hit the side of the barn from the inside with your current piece, it is doubtful you could do better with the .204.

  5. the ruger .204 has a maximum effective distance of 500 yards.

Nevertheless, I cannot endorse this round due to its negligible bullet weight, which is on-par with a .22lr.

The .280 remington is easily effective to 400 yards with bullets up to 3 or 4 times heavier.

  6. The .204 is very accurate.....  My complaints about this cartridge is that its what I call a "johnny come lately" cartridge... Or "cartridge of the month" cartridge....... Its somewhat popular but not enough that I would buy a rifle chambered in it.... The reason is if it loses popularity or another cartridge comes along that's "better" then you will have an expensive rifle nobody wants....   Besides that the ammunition is expensive......

The best choice for a small centerfire cartridge is the .223... Its got a slightly heavier bullet and good long range capabilities.....

Best Rifle???  Your opening a can of worms here.... 10 guys are going to give you 10 opinions....

A bolt action rifle chambered in .223 would be best... Remington, Ruger, Savage, Kimber and CZ all make fine rifles....

  7. The .204 is an excellent varmint round.  At 4000fps, it gets there quicker than a .223.  Custom rifles such as the Cooper Model 21 can shoot 1/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

Other less expensive rifles are the Savage Model 12 Varmint and the Ruger M77 Varmint.  Both of these rifles are capanble of 3/4" or better 100 yard 5 shot groups.
