  1. He was a very good fighter and he is up there with Antonio Cervantes as one of the best Colombian fighters of all time.  Cervantes will always be number one, but Valdez very well could be number two.  Many feel that he should have won the first fight with Carlos Monzon, and the second was very close as well.  He does not get the credit he deserves because he lost to Monzon and came directly after him, but people have to remember that Monzon is one of the best middleweights of all time and there is NO SHAME in losing to him in 2 very close fights.  He went on to win the title after Monzon retired, but obviously was not as great or long a champion as Carlos, but it was very hard to fill someone like Monzon's shoes.  He is a very underrated fighter and one of the best from Colombia, which I take pride in because I am part Colombian.

  2. never heard of him

  3. monzon's last two fights were with valdez (the first being a unification of the belts, as there was only the wba & wbc at the time).

in the second fight, valdez floored monzon for the first time in his career, and also cut monzon and as far as i know, monzon was never cut before either, which contributed to his decision to retire.

valdez also twice beat the tough bennie briscoe.
