  1. A corrections officer usually refers to an officer at the penitentiary level. These are state and federal jobs. Your state's or department of labor website is a good place to check for job announcements. On the federal level checking www.usajobs.com would be a good place to start. A detention officer is usually at your local or county jail. Again the department of labor is a good place to check along with your interested county's website. In a police officer career the experience would help get your foot in the door that extra little bit compared to someone without any other experience. Also look into joining the police reserves or deputy reserves to put towards your resume. Good luck!

  2. For trying to get out of a ticket it depends on the officer.

For hiring preference in my town it is all by test. If your background before the corrections work is a little iffy the successful corrections time will be a major plus. Otherwise worthless for hiring.

In most counties in the US local corrections (jail) is handled by the sheriffs office. You apply like any other job. If they take you they educate you and you go to work. In my county you can't be a sheriff's police officer until you do at least 2 years in corrections.

For state corrections (penitentiary) you apply to the state Department of Corrections.

In some few states you have to go to an academy first, then take a test to become certified before you can apply.

  3. experience if you meet the qualifications and you go with 4 years  of correctional and some1 else goes without those 4 years you get the job that's a real good experience.its very easy and short process to become a correctional officer in California.
