do you need? What is the starting pay like(I live in IL) Are there alot of male nurses out there? If I move to a different state would I have to retake the tests? Would I have to pay for the tests and are they hard?

  1. You asked a lot of questions!

    My sister-in-law is an R.N.  This is what I know from talking to her about the R.N. program:

    1.  It's tough, so you have to be dedicated.

    2.  It takes four years of college to get your R.N.

    3.  Starting pay depends on where you live.  She started around $35,000.00 a year.  She lives in an urban area of Utah.  Pay is usually better if you work in a big city or at a large hospital.

    4.  There are more male nurses around than there used to be, but according to my sister the women still outnumber the men by at least ten to one.

    5.  If you move to another state, you might have to take an exam to get certified in that state.  Some states have reciprocal agreements, but other states (like Florida) require that you pass their certification exam.

    6.  Yes, you have to pay for the tests.  Cost varies from state to state.  Are they difficult?  Depends on how much attention you paid in nursing school and how well you know your job.
