  1. I'm an insurance broker (non-captive agent). The first three years are the hardest but you can work from home. Or, you can work for an agency as a financed agent (they pay bonuses and usually double your commissions.) If you want to go independent like me, all you need is a phone, Internet, fax -- and good leads. You have the licenses, all you need is the marketing and a general agent to work with. I work with Crump Life Insurance Services in Roseland, NJ.

  2. If you have  your license, you ARE an agent.  How hard is it to live off of your sales?  Well, how many sales do you close a week, as a sales associate??

I'm not sure what you're really asking here.

  3. I'm not sure how to answer how "hard" it is, but I recommend focusing on commercial insurance rather than personal lines.  With commercial lines, you are selling insurance during the business day to business people when your kids are in school.  With personal lines, you're working a lot of weekends and evenings to catch people at home.  Also, and best of all, really, high income opportunities are more likely with commercial insurance because the premiums are higher.  I'd rather sell 12 month policies with premiums of $5,000 to $100,000 (and I've sold policies up to $750,000) instead of 6 month personal auto policies with premiums of $500 to $1,000 or so.  Get very well versed in commercial insurance and you will always have a job and jump at any opportunity to handle a book of business when an agent or producer leaves.  Then, sell insurance to your customers and provide excellent service.  You will be invaluable.

  4. Insurance is a service industry. You need interpersonal skill to talk to people and influence clients to be interested and buy the insurance policy they most required.

You need to be professional without which your clients will not buy what you want to sell to them.

You need to market yourself as a expert and knowledgeable on insurance matters and your guidance on such matters will influence clients to buy your policies. . With your enthusiasm and working experience, you can be a successful insurance agent.
