How hard is it to change out the ktichen sink?

I'm pretty good with home improvement stuff, but I've never really messed with plumbing other than fixing a toilet. I'd like to change out our double basin sink that has a disposal and replace it with a single basin sink, water filtration system, and new faucet and leave the existing disposal.

Now I don't think I'd have hand trouble changing out the faucet and installing the water filtration system. But how hard is it to remove the disposal, pipes for double basin sink...take out the sink and replace it....and then put everything back together for a single basin sink?

Lowes will install a new sink for $195, taking out the old sink disposal and facuet and replacing with new ones. That would just leave me to put in the filtration system. I'm not sure how much a plumber would charge yet. Do you think it's worth the money or is this something I might be able to do myself?

  1. If I can do it, anyone can. It's not that difficult...

  2. look you"re gonna spend $80 on the disposal $40 on the sink and about $30 on the faucet and drain that's almost $150 dollars and if you don't have pipe dope putty and the tools that you need you're gonna end up frustrated and gonna spend more money i recommend to let them do it you see and next time you'll get it

  3. just remember to use plumbers putty around the basket strainer or disposal

  4. Make sure the old and new tubs have the same size rim or you could be in trouble right from the start. I have done this before but if I ever want to do it again I'll pay someone else.

  5. It is straight forward but there is always some annoying detail that complicates it. Before you start a project like that take a look under the sink and see what holds it in place,  how much room you will have to reach the dishwasher-to-disposal hose, whether the installer skimped and omitted shut off valves,  how close to the wall the faucet lines are, whether any of the supply pipes are galvanized, whether the drain pipes are in good shape or rotted, whether the disposal has an air gap coming up through the sink, whether any of the valves are jammed in the open position, and how much room you will have to work there when you climb into the cabinet.

Even though it starts out easy and should be within your competence you could run into difficulties that you should anticipate by stocking up on tools, fittings, lights, and drain buckets. That way you won't end up without a sink for weeks while you are dealing with any nasty surprises.

Think it through and then go for it.

  6. You can do it yourself, but it might be worth the $195 charge at Lowes if you get easily frustrated with projects (as I do)!   If you choose to do it yourself, research the internet and you should find several sites with detailed instructions.

    Good luck!
