How hard is it to decapitate someone?

we've all seen it in the movies and anime cartoons. Just how hard would it be to slice someone's head off with a katana in one fell swoop? or any body part for that matter, with any weapon capable of doing such a thing; are there any websites or experiments proving any results? And I'm talking in a combat environment, not on the executioner's chopping block.

  1. a sharp samurai sword could slice through a humans hip, in battle if it got stuck in his enemy he would be killed , which makes the vertebrae pretty simple (that's how the story was told to me, of course i have no actual experience)

  2. It is simple to cut one's head off however, was it not easy is to do it cleanly. Many times when you see a samurai flick you see them chopping heads off very easily which isn't the case. It takes years off study to be able to pull that off and in assisting someone with seppuku or in american terminology hari-kiri you don't take the head off completely, you leave a sliver so the head just dangles in case there are people that are passing by.

  3. Well, you have to aviod getting your head chopped off and getting the alignment of your sword and their body just right for it to happen. Once you get there its like a hot knife through butter. It's getting to that point that the difficulty lies.
