  1. 90 percent of the game is in you head.  if you can master that and put in a bit of practise, you will be surprised as to how quickly you can slice shots from your round.  If you cant get the right mentality, you will spend years improving with out actually getting anywhere.  You might be able to play the shots but without a good atitude towards your game, you will be caught in a slump.  It also depends on how hard you push yourself and what targets you set yourself.

  2. I say go for it!

  3. im in 11th grade and i started golf last summer and played on the team in the fall.  it is a veryyy fun sport. the clothes are awesome too. it is difficult for accuracy so your scores probably wont be that good. but once you find your rhythm, you;ll be fine! and who cares if you arnt the best, atleast you tried and might have fun

  4. you must be in middle school or something.in HS,you would not have been asked if you never played.

  5. don't do it , too hard - let me save you 30-50 years of fustration and cost

  6. First you don't do golf, you play it. Second why would your golf coach want you to play if you have never played before? Its east to suck, but its hard to be good. Just like anything

  7. Ahh the ultimate question...

Well most people who don't understand the game usually are people who haven't tried it. The game itself is slightly physically demanding but its more about stamina then strength.

Where the real game lies is in your head. Handling upsets and frustrations placed upon yourself and how you deal with them directly reflect in your preformance. You must keep your cool and understand what you can and cant do while knowing your boundaries and staying within them.  Another person answered on this thread about competing with other players and is exactly right. If you try to  keep up with someone else your no longer handling the frustrations from expectations put on yourself but rather ones put on you as well, This is where the pros differ from us regular folks. They can handle both.

This is where the real game is, in your head and how you deal with problems and find solutions. That is the allure of the whole game and its teaching abilities directly reflect into your normal life as well. Its an extremely hard game to get good at but much harder to get your head straight first. and without the latter you cant become a good golfer

  8. Why would anyone ask you to play golf on a team if you've never played before. That's like the Red Wings asking Tiger to play goalie for them in the Stanley Cup.

  9. the first person was right

golf, although it may not seem it, is the most difficult sport.

you dont have to be the strongest or the toughest or the tallest or the fastest... but it takes extreme coordination and touch.

you are taking a stick with a grip and a oddly shaped head and trying to get a ball with a weird surface to go where you want it to.

also, you'll need to worry about, trees, wind, lakes, sand traps, high grass, and giant robots.

well not the giant robots but you feel my drift.

you should at least try it, and if you completely suck, its ok because its insanely hard.

one day for me ill be getting pars and birdies all day and will be hitting the ball like 270 yards, and the next day ill be topping the ball and it rolls 10 feet then stops, and it will go twice as far to the left as it will forward.

now thats just me sucking but you should give it a shot, it wont even tire you.

    good luck :)

  10. Golf is the most difficult easy sport in the world.

The key to golf is playing the game within yourself.  If I go out and try to compete with a friend who shoots 80 on an 18 hole course, I'll shoot 100.  If I go out with the same friend and compete with myself only, I can shoot 88 or 89 on the same course.

A good driving range should have some clubs that you can practice with.  A bad range will have something to hit the ball with.  Try it.  You might like it.  Many a business deal has been completed on the green.  This is something that could help you for a lifetime.

  11. I'm an average athlete who primarily played baseball & basketball.  Without a doubt, golf is the toughest sport I've ever played.  I love the challenge.

If you're REALLY interested in playing, I say go for it!

  12. Here's another aspect:

If you try out for the golf team and make it or can even just practice with any level team, you get free green fees, a chance to try out a variety of equipment, free or cheap coaching for a normally very expensive, worthwhile sport.

Golfing will not keep you in shape like cross-country, but it will be much more valuable for your social and perhaps business life later on.

Therefore, if you have the inclination, the opportunity and the chance, give it a try.  I played three sports in HS, and unfortunately, none of them were golf--I wish it had been possible.

  13. golf is all about how you control your body movements. as you play golf, you learn to control your body more easily. it is difficult to do this.

  14. Well first i'd question why they want you on the golf team if you've never played before. Do'nt get pressured into something that's going to force you to play well or go home because you may get discouraged easily. Golf isn't that type of game.

Secondly, golf is not hard. It's just swinging a club and hitting a ball. Playing golf like Tiger Woods is hard. LOL. What is also hard is keeping yourself from getting angry at yourself and the game. right now, i'd read up on the rules of golf and go to the driving range and swing at some balls. If you find yourself at least enjoying the act of hitting the ball, nomatter where it goes, i'd get a lesson or 2 and go from there. I guarantee you that you won't regret getting into the game other than only being able to play it for 3/4 of the year (maybe less).

  15. Give it a shot.  It's a game you can enjoy for the rest of your life.  It's a great way to get exercise, socialize, network, escape from your spouce and children.  And you dont have to be good to have fun.
