i originally got a quote from geico that was higher than progressive, however i recently spoke with geico again and they can now beat progressive for me since i am a home owner. in any case i have only had insurance with progressive for a month, and already made that 1st big downpayment you have to make. how hard is it to cancel insurance with progressive and move over to geico???

  1. Check with Progressive, they ALSO give a homeowner discount.

It's easy to cancel and move over, but there will be a cancellation fee, and you're not going to get any money back.

  2. Buddy, before you drop one, make d a r n  certain the second company actually does  pick you up ... with the same limits and same exclusions.

  3. Get the policy with Geico in force FIRST.... call & set it up & pay the down payment...

THEN call Progressive & see what they need to cancel - possibly a signature - but more $ will not be necessary

  4. It is not difficult at all. FIRST place coverage with Geico. Then contact Progressive and inform them you wish to cancel your policy effective the day the Geico policy comes into force. There will probably be a cancellation form you will have to sign. Keep in mind that there may be a charge for canceling the policy, or they may cancel the policy on a short rate basis, which means the earned premium will be higher than if it were cancelled on a pro rata basis. Ask the person who you contact about this. If they say that it will be cancelled on a short rate basis ask if it would be possible to cancel on a pro rata basis. This will reduce the earned premium and will increase the return premium, if any.
