Ok, im in year 10, and currently I want to be an aerospace engineer, or a pilot. At the moment I'm leaning towards engineering because pilot training is expensive and I'm fairly good at math and science. I'm doing all the right subjects for an aerospace engineering course, I'm just wondering what the employment oppurtunities are like in Australia for them, and if I'm alot better off doing mechanical engineering. But I'm much more interested in designing a plane then a car...

  1. Very Hard.

    How many aircraft manufacturers are Aussy. and what is there manufacturing throughput and design update cycles.

    You will have to move to get the job you want probably, and you will have to be VERY good.

    If you love planes I would suggest doing the degree, it will still make you employable outside that field (i.e. manufacturing, automotive, power, product design etc.)

    Then you will have the knowledge you need, the ability to get a good job, and with a good job enough money to get your pilots license.

    If you really want to design a plane you DON'T have to be working for someone. You can do it yourself. the wright brothers did, so did several men throughout history.

    Good luck.

    UPDATE!!!:::

    Sure its easy enough. If you are willing to join the Air force you will find it easy to get a job in the field. Once you have a degree, esp. aeronautical you will be of a much higher calibre than most of those in the air force at technician level. You would want to apply to the officer training program, NOT the recruitment centres.

    Don;t forget though that after you join any military service your life is not your own. It's your countries, your politicians and your officers in that order.

  2. Consider the defence forces, I'd imagine outside of them it could be hard. Australia isn't exactly the best place to pursue aeronautical engineering. I do believe RMIT have a good course, and you can travel for work later.

  3. You got to be d**n good if you wanna work as a design engineer. Alternatively, you can become a maintenance engineer too. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers are pretty high in demand but the work is quite tough and hazardous as well. The things you study are relevant but I would say, not entirely necessary if you wanna become an AME.

    Airlines, including Qantas are "always" looking for AMEs. And with the labour laws and whatnot in Australia, I think you will be much more protected as compared to other countries.
