i know someone who says his brother got him into the union...he (the guy) had an interview with the union (as a laborer i think), apparently, and got IN just like that. i find that hard to believe with all the people out of work-incl those already IN the union. do you think he is lying or is this possible?

  1. Generally, for MANY kinds of workplaces, if you get hired at a for a permanent job that has a Union Contract to protect your work group, you automatically join when hired, unless the position is exempt.  Some short-term positions are required to hire Workers carrying Union Cards, like the Film Industry, and if you are hired the Reps may be on site to sign you up.

Since you don't say which Union or which kind of work - I'll take a wild guess that you are talking about one of the Building Trades?  A good on-ramp if you are also still building skills and experience is to explore Apprenticeship Programs. They can lead to well-compensated careers.

Learn from long-time members - however you join - back your fellow workers seeking fairness and safety eveywhere - and participate in democratic decision-making - so it is truly YOUR organization - representing your interests.  Best wishes for your Union career!
