Surfboard (bigger one is easier to stand on)

Leash (so that you don't have to swim to the shore every time you wipe out)

Surf Wax (makes you stick to the board)

Wetsuit (Spring suit for warmer weather; full suit for winter weather)

A knowledge of how to swim (this is important)

Oh a beach or wave pool is also needed.

Recently ESPN assembled a panel of sport scientists to rank 60 sports for difficulty.  Surfing ranked number 23.  

The difficulty of your surfing goals will depend on how proficient you want to become, what kind of surf you have access to, and your current fitness level.

You don't need much equipement to surf.  You will need a surfboard with a leash, fins, and wax.  A board will cost anywhere from $100 for a cheap used board to $1000 for a top notch custom epoxy ride.  Get some surf trunks that will protect the top of your legs from sunburn and make sure that the fly wont scratch your board or rub the wax off.  If you plan to surf in cold water you will need a wetsuit.  Wetsuits are rated for the water temp you want to surf in and cost $100 to $400 depending on the quality of material and construction.  

As far as skills go, there are some shortcuts you can take.  Surfing can be frustrating to learn.  You might end up paddling for 10 minutes just to ride for three seconds and fall down.  There's no lift to the top in this sport!  I would recommend a combination of weight lifting, swimming, and skateboarding to get in shape for surfing.  Balance and core building exercises done with a swiss/balance ball and indo board can be fun and beneficial.  Take a lesson when you start and another when you start to figure turning out.  The feedback you may recieve from a good instructor is priceless.
